VOLUNTEER
There are many opportunities to volunteer both in the US/Canada and in Ukraine. Volunteers for events such as the Lavender Festival and Helvetia Christmas Tree Farm which raise money for SMU’s work are always needed. You may help serve tea, greet children as Santa, sew, park vehicles and much more. Volunteer opportunities are sometimes available according to need in Ukraine. Teaching a skill, helping write curriculum, or develop a business or build a farm structure are a few examples of need generated mission trips.

About the Author
Samaritan Ministries in Ukraine (SMU) was founded in 1993 by Don Miller, a retired pastor and seminary administrator. Don’s parents had fled to Canada in 1927 from Ukraine (formerly Russia) during Stalin’s Reign of Terror. Growing up as a little boy, he heard many gruesome stories of the repression of his family under the Communists. His curiosity about the fate of many of his family members who remained behind motivated Don to begin leading “roots” tours to Ukraine.
It was while Don was on one of his early tours that he saw the desperate plight of the Ukrainian people and was motivated to do something to help alleviate their poverty and suffering. The work initially began with a humanitarian outreach, but soon evolved into a full-fledged ministry with the many services offered today.
During his yearly tour visits to Ukraine, Don spent much his time in the former KGB archives researching his family. There he found the detailed accounts of the arrest, imprisonment and murder of his relatives and many other Germans living in the Zhitomir region. This prompted Don to write extensively about the fate of the Germans who lived in this area for over 70 years.
